Is Fear of Punishment a Valid Reason to Turn to Jesus?
Is it possible to turn to Jesus for the wrong reason? When Jesus said, "...whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life", what kind of believing is necessary to obtain eternal life? If someone turns to Him just to escape eternal punishment for sins, will that save them? Tell me what you think.

(THIS IS PHILIP )Yes and no Lordship salvation (faith) is the key to salvation in my opion.Simple assent to the gospel, divorced from a transforming commitment to the living Christ, is by biblical standards less than faith, and less than saving, and to elicit only assent of this kind would be to secure only false conversions. So the gospel really is at stake in this discussion, though not in the way that the opponents of "lordship salvation" think.what is in question is the NATURE OF FAITH. Matt 20 :1-16 ,2peter 1:10 make sure. And I will close with this (Romans 10:9) and (Acts 10:36)He does not become anyones Saviour until that one receives Him for who He is- Lord of all.The Lord will not save those whom He cannot command. He will not divide His offices. You cannot believe on a Half-Christ.We take Him for what He is-the anointed Saviour and Lord who is King of kings and Lord of lords!!! He would not be Who He is if He saved us and called us and chose us without the understanding that He can also guide and control our lives. Thank you Soli Deo Gloria!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would propose that at the all who are saved first are faced with the ugliness of our sinfulness and the realization that the consequence is hell and separation from God/all things good. We are utterly overwhelmed by the burden of our sin and our helplessness to follow the law and thereby save ourselves. God put the law in place for this very purpose, did He not? So that those who would be saved would cry out in desperation for a savior!
ReplyDeleteIn Romans 10 Paul says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame"…for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 1 John 5 says that we are born again when we believe that Jesus is the Christ, the promised Messiah, the Son of God.
1 John 5 also says, “Anyone who is born of God does not continue to sin…”
As Paul said, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?”
The church (or rather, churchgoers) needs this warning now more than ever!
